HP OMNIBOOK 5500 NOTEBOOK PC - WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS 3.11 AND NOVELL, INSTALLING AN IBM TOKEN-RING CREDITCARD ADAPTER
System Requirements
* HP OmniBook 5500 Notebook PC with BIOS v 2.0 (version viewed during reboot).
* IBM Token-Ring CreditCard Adapter (PC card).
* Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11 installed on the HP OmniBook 5500 Notebook PC.
* HP OmniBook 5500 Notebook PC PCMCIA Card and Socket Services for MS-DOS (R) and Windows installed. (Included in original installation.)
* Drivers (see "Preparation" below):
* TOKENCS.COM (3-30-95 or 2-19-96).
POINTTR.EXE (7-5-94) if using point enabler.
* Novell Client software (v 4.0 used for testing, Install v 1.21).
Preparation
Get the IBM Drivers
* Download TRCC.EXE from the IBM web site. Run TRCC.EXE on a hard disk, then run TRCC1.EXE and TRCC2.EXE from the hard disk.
-OR-
* Download TRCC.ZIP from IBM BBS at (919) 517-0001 (you must type REF DISK at the BBS Main menu). Unzip the ZIP file on a hard disk. Follow the instructions in the unzipped readme file for making a diskette.
Adjust PCMCIA Memory Allocation
1. Open C:\CONFIG.SYS for editing.
2. Look for two lines containing EMM396.EXE, one starting with "REM." Allocate 32 KB of memory for PCMCIA support by editing these lines so the following line is the only one WITHOUT "REM"
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems x=c000-d7ff i=d800-e7ff x=e800-efff
3. Open C:\CARDSOFT\CSALLOC.INI for editing.
4. Look for two sets of lines containing MEMINCLUDE and MEMEXCLUDE. Allocate 32 KB of memory for PCMCIA support by editing these lines so the following lines are the ones WITHOUT "#"
MEMINCLUDE=D000-D7FF
MEMEXCLUDE=C000-CFFF,D800-DFFF,E000-EFFF
5. Exit Windows, then press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot the HP OmniBook 5500 Notebook PC.
Procedure
NOTE: These steps assume no other network adapters have been installed previously. For testing, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI started in its original version and C:\WINDOWS\PROTOCOL.INI did not exist.
1. Insert the IBM Token-Ring PC card in one of the PC card slots.
2. Exit Windows and run the Novel Client installation program (INSTALL), or set up the Novell software as required for your version.
During the Novell Client installation, you're asked to choose the network board (adapter). In the list of adapters, select Other Drivers (at the end of the list). Insert the disk that came with the Token-Ring PC card (or, if needed, the disk made under "Preparation") into drive A, set the path to "A:\", and press ENTER.
3. When prompted about restarting, DO NOT RESTART. Choose Continue so you can continue the installation.
NOTE: The remaining installation steps assume Card and Socket Services are running on the computer. (If you want to use the card's point enabler instead, follow the installation steps listed below under "Using Point Enablers.")
4. Exit Windows.
5. Make sure the IBM installation disk is still in drive A. At the MS-DOS prompt, type these commands:
A:
INSTALL
6. When prompted, press ENTER to start the Express installation.
7. When prompted for the default drive, press ENTER to choose drive C.
8. When prompted for the network environment, press ENTER to choose Novell.
9. When prompted for the NetWare directory, type your directory and press ENTER.
10. When the installation finishes, remove the diskette and press F3 to exit.
11. If you intend to make a network connection while NOT connected to a docking system, open C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT for editing. Find the ":Windows" section near the end of the file and delete "/N" from the "win" line to enable network support.
12. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot.
You can verify the installation by checking NET.CFG and STARTNET.BAT:
* Open C:\NWCLIENT\NET.CFG for editing. The "Link Driver" section should match the following lines. (HP testing was based on the Auto 16/4 adapter. If you're using a different type of adapter, your data rate and ring speed settings may differ from those shown below.)
Link Driver TOKENCS
PCMCIA
DATA RATE 4
AUTORINGSPEED
* Open C:\NWCLIENT\STARTNET.BAT for editing. Make sure the TOKENCS.COM line is included in the file. The following example shows the file used for testing:
SET NWLANGUAGE=ENGLISH
C:\NWCLIENT\LSL.COM
C:\NWCLIENT\TOKENCS.COM
C:\NWCLIENT\IPXODI.COM
C:\NWCLIENT\VLM.EXE
Using Point Enablers
If you want to use the card's point enabler instead of Card and Socket Services, follow these installation steps after you set up the card in Novell Client, as described above. The following steps assume Card and Socket Services are NOT running on the computer (sscirrus.exe, cs.exe, csalloc.exe, and cardid.exe are not loaded).
1. Set up the card in Novell Client, as described above.
2. Exit Windows.
3. Make sure the IBM installation disk is in drive A. At the MS-DOS prompt, type these commands:
A:
INSTALL
4. When prompted, choose the Custom installation by pressing DOWN ARROW, then ENTER.
5. When prompted for the default drive, press ENTER to choose drive C.
6. When prompted for the configuration options, use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys and ENTER to change each of these options, one at a time:
Computer name: change to Other, then choose Yes when prompted about the default enabler.
Card socket: "A" for the lower slot or "B" for the upper slot. You must install the card in the socket you choose.
Interrupt level: change to 11.
Shared RAM base: change to D4000.
Then select Done and press ENTER.
7. When prompted for the NetWare directory, type your directory and press ENTER.
8. When notified about EMM386, press ENTER to continue.
9. When the installation finishes, remove the diskette and press F3 to exit.
10. Optional: To delete the redundant EMM386 memory specification, open C:\CONFIG.SYS for editing. At the end of the EMM386.EXE line, you can delete "X=D000-D1FF X=D400-D7FF" (the original "x=c000-d7ff" specification covers the requirements).
11. If you intend to make a network connection while NOT connected to a docking system, open C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT for editing. Find the ":Windows" section near the end of the file and delete "/N" from the "win" line to enable network support.
12. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot.
You can verify the installation by checking NET.CFG and CONFIG.SYS. (STARTNET.BAT is the same as described in the previous section.)
DATA RATE 4
AUTORINGSPEED
MEM #1 D0000
MEM #2 D4000
INT 11
* Open C:\CONFIG.SYS for editing. The following line should appear at the start of the file ("SA" for lower slot, "SB" for upper slot):
DEVICE=C:\POINTTR.EXE SA RS=4 MMIO=D000 IRQ=B SRAM=D400,16
