System Soft Card Manager Problems *** IF YOU ARE ONLY USING ONE PCMCIA CARD, THE MOST EFFICIENT SOLUTION *** IS TO REMOVE ALL OF THE CARDSOFT SOFTWARE FROM YOUR CONFIG.SYS AND *** USE ECARD.EXE. *** If you are using a Grey Cell Ethernet II card and a modem, you may *** want to try the ECARDNM direct enabler. Please consult your *** installation disc, or download it from our BBS +44 181 903 4318 The SystemSoft Card Soft drivers, as shipped, do not always automatically recognise the Ethernet Gold PCMCIA Card. If you have problems, there are two solutions: 1. Adding an extra library to the CardSoft software. This will enable the Gold Card using the SystemSoft software, but may limit the number of available ports and IRQ's. 2. Using our own Card Services Client is addition to the CardSoft software. This is more versatile, allowing you extra control over the allocation of resources, but uses slightly memory. 1. Adding an extra library. Make sure that you have not loaded ECARD.EXE or ECARDCS. Go to the CardSoft directory, and copy over the file GREYCELL.CLB from the /DIAGNOSE directory on the Gold Card Installation Disc. Using a text editor, add the line: CardLib=Greycell.clb as the FIRST entry in the [Libraries] section at the end of the CSALLOC.INI file. You can select the Card IRQ and IO port, by editing the lines: Lan1Port=300 Lan1IRQ=5 which appear in the earlier section of CSALLOC.INI. NOTE In some earlier versions of CardSoft, the software will allocate IO Port 300, whatever is entered on the Lan1Port Line. If this occurs, either update your CardSoft software from your PC vendor, or use ECARDCS (q.v.). 2. Has Cardsoft worked? To find out if CardSoft has recognised the Gold Card, reboot the PC, and then insert the Gold Card. If the card is enabled, there will be three beeps. If this happens, then the card is working; if you have problems from this point, you need to check you network software installation and find out if the I/O port and IRQ you have chosen are appropriate. Use ASK-RSC, ASK-CS and your PC manual to check. If there are not three beeps, check that the card is O.K. Reboot your PC, press F5 to prevent the CONFIG.SYS being processed, and then test the Gold Card by running ECARD /IRQ=5 from the installation disc. If this is O.K., you may have incorrect settings for your Extended Memory Manager, inconsistant CardSoft configuration files or may need to reinstall or upgrade Cardware. Alternatively, you can use the Grey Cell Card Services Client ECARDCS, which is explained below. 3. Using ECARDCS with SystemSoft. Copy ECARDCS from your installation disc, or download it from our BBS (+44 181 903 0852). You will need Version 2.01 or higher to work with CardSoft. You can also download the latest disc from the BBS. The simplest way to install ECARDCS is to run the installation program. If you want to install it manually, then follow the steps below: Remove any ECARD enablers, and reboot your PC, with CardSoft present. Run ASK-RSC.EXE to find out what resources are available, and note which interrupts and I/O's are free. The Gold card can use any IRQ, but 5 or 3 is the most usual option. The port options are 300, 320, 340 or 360, and a range of 1F must be available. Make a note of these. (If no resources are available, please contact your PC vendor for a PCMCIA software update.) Modify your CONFIG.SYS to add ECARDCS as a device driver. Note that the placement is crucial for correct operation. ECARDCS must be loaded in the CONFIG.SYS as follows: DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SS365SL.EXE (file name may vary) Socket Services DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CS.EXE Card Services DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CSALLOC.EXE CSALLOC.INI Resource Allocator Then load ECARDCS: DEVICE=C:\ECARDCS.EXE /IRQ 5 /IO 300 (use the resources Gold Card Client you wrote down!) before : DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CARDID.EXE Generic Client Then reboot your PC. 4. Setting up your network. Unlike a conventional ISA Card, the interrupts and I/O allocation of a PCMCIA card are controlled by software. This means that you can easily change them using CARDWARE.INI or ECARDCS. However, when you change them, your network software will not be aware of the change, and you will need to make adjustments to the appropriate configuration files. For Novell, this is the NET.CFG file, and for most other systems it is the PROTOCOL.INI. Please refer to the manual for more information. 5. General Notes If you have multiple options within your CONFIG.SYS, you need to make sure that all changes are made to the correct section. If you have a PCMCIA option, then you should always choose this at bootup. For more information, please consult your MS-DOS manual. Do not run MEMMAKER after installing CardSoft. It is likely to modify resources and prevent correct operation. For more information, please contact Grey Cell Systems. To help us help you, please FAX details of the problem, along with a copy of your CONFIG.SYS, CSALLOC.INI and CARDID.INI. Without these, it is unlikely that we can solve any software problems.
