TI THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTING SCIENCE -- THE FIRST TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AV ftp thorhild.cs.ualberta.ca:pubTR91-01.ps.Z AV mail britta@cs.ualberta.ca OR ALBRT LT TR 91-01 AU Keith Smillie MN Jan YR 1991 AB ABS This history, therefore, begins with some remarks on early computing at the University of Alberta, and then describes the origins of the Computing Centre with the acquisition of the first computer in 1957, its development into an academic department in 1964, and the growth of the Department of Computing Science through the next quarter-century. While I have tried to give a reasonably well- rounded account, in some places I may have dwelt too long on events or topics of particular interest to me, while in other places I may have considered too briefly items which some person would consider of greater interest or importance. Also I may have ground an axe or two, although not too vigorously I hope. I offer no apologies for any of these idiosyncrasies. This is no way an official history. It is simply a personal account of the development of computing in an environment where I have spent very pleasantly most of my professional life. I have enjoyed writing whatever it is that I have written. I hope otrs will enjoy reading it.
