AB There has been increasing interest in recent years in
concurrent object-oriented systems: systems in which at least
some of the objects can be `active' concurrently, and (typically)
can continue processing after a message send.  The aim is to be
able to express algorithms and applications in a concurrent
manner which can be exploited by aparallel computer system. _
    This report considers `actors' systems, and describes an
implementation of  an actor computational model.  It further
discusses various implementation  techniques for actor
programming languages on realistic large-scale parallel 
computers.
