The ease of use and colorful screens is what separates LOCK'M-UP from other password security programs. LOCK'M-UP will stop the casual user from gaining access to your computer, but is not designed to thwart the most sophisticated hacker. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ------------------- LOCK'M-UP requires DOS 3.1 or greater, 128K of RAM and a hard disk drive. It will automatically sense which display adapter you are using and adjust the colors accordingly. FEATURES -------- Once LOCK'M-UP is executing, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-Break, and Ctrl-Alt-Del are all inactive. Entering the password or shutting the computer off is the only way of exiting to DOS. Also, password entry is echoed with small blocks to prevent the casual observer from getting your password. INSTALLATION ------------ Prior to setting up LOCK'M-UP, make a BACKUP copy of the disk. Installing and setting up LOCK'M-UP is very simple. The steps are outlined below: 1. Copy LKMUP25.EXE into the ROOT directory ofyour hard disk. If you have more than one hard disk be sure to copy the files to drive C:. IMPORTANT: ALL LOCK'M-UP FILES MUST BE IN THE ROOT DIRECTORY! 2. Type the command: CD\ . This moves you to the root directory. Whenever you see this informs you to press the Enter key. DO NOT TYPE THE WORD ENTER! 3. Now you will see your opening screen come onto your monitor. This is the introduction screen. Whenever you are ready, press any key to continue. The next screen is where you enter your password. One unique feature is the password can be any extended character. This is accomplished by pressing and holding down the ALT key and pressing any key on your numeric key pad. When you've finished typing your password, press . Notice the password was echoed with small blocks. Another screen will be generated onto your monitor. This prompts you that your password was saved. 4. CONGRATULATIONS, you have just installed and configured LOCK'M-UP. Now, verify LOCK'M-UP has your password correctly by typing the command LKMUP25 . Press any key to exit the introduction screen. When prompted, type your new password. Notice the password is echoed with small blocks. Once you have entered the password press . You only have one try at entering the password correctly. Get it wrong and LOCK'M-UP will display a screen--"ACCESS DENIED" and sound an alarm. After a period of four minutes LOCK'M-UP will park your hard disk and lock your computer up, just like the name states. The only way of getting your computer back is the flipping the Big Red Switch (Turning the power off and on again). Enter it correctly, the computer will display the ending screen. The information displayed is where to register this program and the registration fee. Go ahead and enter an incorrect password, just to hear what the alarm sounds like and see what the computer does. IMPORTANT NOTE: LOCK'M-UP's passwords are case-sensitive. You must enter the password EXACTLY as you typed it in the FIRST TIME or when you use the /RECON switch! Combinations of upper and lower case letters can be used to further confuse potential hackers. As previously stated you may use non-keyboard characters in your password. This is accomplished by holding down the key while simultaneously pressing a number between 129 and 255 on the NUMERIC KEY PAD. Use caution with these, since they are hard to remember. CHANGING YOUR PASSWORD ---------------------- At any time you feel you need to change your password, this can be accomplished very easily by using the /RECON switch. The command looks like this: LKMUP25 /RECON or LKMUP25 /recon. It does not matter if the command is in all CAPS. REMEMBER your password! One entered you cannot get your password back, unless you use the /RECON switch again. Syntax: LKMUP25 /RECON /KEYB -- This is known as the "Walk away switch". This allows you lock you computer up while you are away. This will NOT force you to reboot your machine if a incorrect password is entered. It will continuely loop until the correct password is entered. Once your password is entered correctly it will tell you if anyone has tried to gain access, and how many times they tried to enter the password. Syntax: LKMUP25 /KEYB HOW TO USE LOCK'M-UP EFFECTIVELY -------------------------------- Naturally, to make LOCK'M-UP work effectively you have to use it, and use it correctly. Listed below are several ways to implement LOCK'M-UP. 1. Place LOCK'M-UP in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Be sure to place the command LOCKMUP as the first command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The reason for this is to ensure LOCK'M-UP is executed first. This minimizes the chance of someone breaking out of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and aborting LOCK'M-UP's execution. As soon as you enter the correct password, the remaining commands in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file will be executed, just as before LOCK'M-UP was installed. 2. Change the HIDDEN attribute for LKMUP25.EXE to ON. This can be accomplished by using a file utility to change the attribute. Doing this simply hides the file when someone uses the DIR command. 3. Remember the obvious, DO NOT use your name or social security number. This is too easy for someone to figure out. 4. Also, store bootable disks AWAY from your computer.
